Slot Machine Hit the Jackpot

Okay, so. Slot Machine. I must admit, I was kind of reluctant to get into this band. Their new album, Grey, came out back in June, and I remember when their first single from it, “ฝัน / Fun (Dream)” started playing on it. And goshhhh was this song OVERPLAYED. Everywhere I looked it was on the radio, the music video was on TV, in the malls, everywhere. And I had heard of Slot Machine before, I remember when their first album came out, and they were this little indie band nobody cared about, and every time I saw this MV I would think wow, WHAT happened that all the sudden they’ve exploded in popularity like this? Why are they EVERYWHERE now?

I was still hesitant to give them a chance, not remembering being particularly impressed with their earlier release, I just didn’t get it. But, the more I was forced to listen to their song “Fun,” the frontman’s voice began to grow on me, as did the lyrics, and that guitar melody sure is catchy…

Once again, Sony wins for awesome music videos. Love the feel of this one, like the planetary and space effects, it makes it feel surreal and dreamlike. And I must admit I really do like the lyrics to this song. Really poetic, great meaning, awesome.

Then their second single came out, “หากฉันตาย / Hahk Chun Dtai (If I Die).” And, of course, with a name like that I was a bit weirded out hahaha. It was a while before I finally caved and let myself listen to it. At first the lyrics weren’t really my cup of tea, but the melody itself is awesome, and like I said, vocalist First’s voice is growing on me. The music video… wow, I don’t know how to describe it. It’s an interesting concept, and I love how they approached it with the doors and peepholes and everything, but it’s another of those MVs that make me angry haha…I hate men!! Hahaha, and I feel to ever try to kill yourself over a breakup is absolutely ridiculous. (If you’re gonna hurt someone, hurt the guy instead, right? ;D) But after watching the MV, the lyrics made sense, that in the end, forget men, your mom will understand and love you more than any guy will, and yeah, GREAT message, definitely worth a watch at least once~

So yeah…I was on the verge of becoming a Slot Machine fan, but not quite there yet, until my friend and I went to a concert one day. We went for Butterfly Effect and Lipta, but Slot Machine happened to be there as well. At first I honestly didn’t want to stay to watch Slot Machine, as they were the last group performing. I’d have rather left and followed Butterfly Effect or Lipta out…but man am I glad my friend wanted to stay! Dang, Slot Machine puts on an AWESOME live! They’re truly unique! From looks, to stage crew, to mannerisms and sound, everything was so different and so much fun to watch. They really got the crowd going! And they were crazy! All over the place!! I’m in love with the bassist!! Hahaha, one of these days I’ll have to upload the fancam I took that’s still on my camera for you guys, cause dang, that bassist was HYSTERICAL, it looked like he was having a freaking seizure ahahaha~ Definitely an awesome group to see live, if you get a chance, don’t pass it up!!

Pretty recently (it’s only been two weeks or so, right?) the group has released their third single, “เหนือกาลเวลา / Neua Gahn Welah (Above Time).” A slow song, but so very Slot Machine, I love it. The lyrics are so freaking sweet, it’s another song that makes me want to flop on my bed, hug my pillow, and sigh.

เวลาที่เราห่างแสนไกล
The times we’re so far apart
แต่ใจกลับเหมือนเป็นดั่งเมื่อวาน
But our hearts return like it’s yesterday

I really love the MV as well. While it may not be the most happening thing, it fits the softness and lyrics of the song perfectly, from the hexagonal lens filter that matches the shape of their album, to the pretty girl, walking along, lost in thought. It’s great~

Every track on their album is great! From the slower numbers to the more energetic ones, I can listen to every single one without ever wanting to skip through any. All the songs are so very distinguishably Slot Machine, but at the same time, each one is very unique, none of them blend together, none of them are boring.

Besides the singles, here’s my personal favorite track, “You Are Nothing.” Surprise! An English song! No fobby English here! Since it’s English I won’t bother posting lyrics, just listen to it! Love the lyrics

AND, finishing this review off, gotta say their album is worth getting just for the CD case alone. Again, hats off to Sony’s graphic designers!

NOW I realize why they exploded in popularity and are everywhere now…because they’re AWESOME.
