Yesss, finally it’s time to review the new So Cool album, “Five!”

Sorry for the delay, sadly returning home after my Thailand summer is a several-day endeavor, and I’m still not settled back in my dorms yet. But anyway, without further adieu, here it is~

First I’ll comment that the album title, “Five,” is simple but quite fitting for it, it being not only their fifth full album, but also because they’ve bumped up to five members now as well. I’d also say something like “it’s five times more cooler too,” but that might be borderline too cheesy.

As for the tracks…Hmm…I don’t want to give the impression that it’s a bad album, cause it’s not, it’s not by any means, I absolutely love it, I think it’s another solid release for the group, and I’d recommend it to anyone …Ackkk I don’t know how to put it haha…

The overall change in sound wasn’t as big as I first thought, it was just the first single, “Pai Loo Lom.” Any long-time So Cool fan should be happy to know that all of Joke’s songs still sound just the same as the good ol’ days, still so cannon, standard So Cool, all made of awesomeness The three duets are also amazing too~ Evolving sound, most definitely, but it’s still got that So Cool vibe to it, you know? You can easily still tell it’s them, and Golf and Joke both have such strong yet different voices, they do make a good duet~

But…I dunno, I guess I just don’t like how disjointed the album feels? :S With the tracks half split between Joke and Golf and labeled as such… I have nothing at all against Golf, I’m actually really impressed with his voice, he’s got talent, he really does, it’s just… His solo songs are great for what they are, super awesome, but they don’t really sound anything like the old So Cool. He’s got a great rock ballad voice, and even can go screamy O_O I was surprised and impressed to hear him screeching like Nap Retrospect at their last concert I went to haha

Perhaps that’s the reason I’ve kind of been wondering lately about how he got added… I mean, after Potato were “coaxed” to turn towards a heavier, darker rock and switch record branches (perhaps coincidentally) after the huge success of screamo groups like Retrospect, Sweet Mullet, and Oblivious took off, you can’t blame me for wondering what other groups GMM has tinkered with, can you? I mean, not trying to say that the other members of the band aren’t important, but…vocals are usually the main identity of a band, chai mai? And Joke has such a unique, distinct voice, he really made So Cool So Cool, and was the reason I ever got into them to begin with and I feel his voice should always be the dominant one…

IF if it is the case that GMM is the one that added Golf, I gotta say I’d feel kinda…bad? Bad for Joke and the rest of the group, as it was their group and they were forced to change like that? And bad for Golf, as he wants to be a singer, obviously, but to be thrown into an existing group has to be awkward if they weren’t all friends first and didn’t want the change na…
But maybe this really isn’t the case at all, I really don’t know. Maybe I’m just way over thinking things too much. Maybe I’m just hugely biased, me being madly in love with Joke and not wanting to see him pushed to the back There doesn’t seem to be any bad blood or feelings of ill will and contemptment between Golf and the rest of the group, so regardless, as long as they’re getting along and everyone’s happy~

Okay, getting to the music now

Like I mentioned before, So Cool tends to have such poetic lyrics, I’m scared to translate them haha, either I don’t understand them completely or I don’t know how to word them properly in English that would give them the poetic justice they deserve haha… But I’ll give it a try! *soo soo* HAHAHA EDIT: NO MORE TRANSLATING SO COOL FOR TAHMNONG, OKAY?? NO MORE, NO MORE, I’M DONE Hahahaaaa, mannnn, I think I lost several handfulls of hair trying to weed my way through this album… I think So Cool is more difficult to put in English than Buddha Bless, and that’s saying a lottt 0_0 Duuuude…it makes me want to like..whine and cry and throw a tantrum at Joke, like why the heck he’s gotta write so complicated lyrics lmaoooo… Anyway, here are the two songs that were able to be messily completed haha

Besides “Pai Loo Lom”, another of my favorite songs on this album is “Jai Mai Cheuang / Untamed Heart,” one of Joke’s solos. I really like the lyrics (even if they are a bit emo, I need sad songs once in a while :P) and I love Joke’s voice. ILOVEJOKE *cough* Sorry, I’m done, I swear. Anyway, check it out~~~

Another favorite track of mine is “Joker.” I love this song!!! It’s so upbeat and fun to belt along with, good lyrics, love Joke’s voice, and gives you a sample of what Golf is capable of~

All in all, this is an awesome release, definitely proves So Cool are still “Soooooo cool” Both Joke and Golf know how to sing, and of course the entire band knows how to rock. All the tracks are great, Love it~ And if I didn’t think I’d end up hanging myself out of frustration, I’d translate more haha

รักสามเศร้า / Ruk Saam Sao / Sad Love Triangle is by the RS group Prik Thai and is the first single off their 3rd album titled “After Six”.

Frankly, I haven’t really heard of this group before (maybe because I have focused less on RS groups) but I really liked the melody of this song with the violin leads.

The setting of the MV fit the song really well; a girl and her two close male friends, one whom she used to date but left her and the other who took his place. I liked Nathalie’s main outfit also. As for the guys, I gotta say I’m not sure about the on-screen chemistry she had with them. I think they make convincing friends to say the least although the boys need work on their on-queue crying skills. Good MV nonetheless.

I.See.U is the latest release from Ice Sarunyu the first single to kick off his 3rd album set to be released in October.

i was kind of scared and nervous for what the song would be, you know singers tend to go a little crazy once theyve been established but i should have known better… well at least i know ice wouldnt do anything tooo crazy but i dont know about the powers that be.

but i can honestly say i love the song… its so different its so not thai and yet thai at the same time. what i mean is that its obvious that musically it has a lot of different influences, but at least i cant really pinpoint any one that hes trying to imitate… like he took what he liked and really made it his own. i was also a little iffy about having a japanese rap thrown into it but somehow it works… i guess the techno-y sound helps because if you dont really pay attention you dont even notice that its japanese but i love his I SEE YOU at the end of it.

Meet twin 18 year old sisters Neuy and Jaem, from the cute little H!P-style duet, Neko Jump.

While anyone that knows me knows I hate all the Jpop and Kpop-esque groups that have suddenly been mass produced lately, and feel Thailand should stick to creating and maintaining its own style… But.. Like I stated before, I can never say I COMPLETELY hate a certain genre, because there’s always at least one exception… and in this case, that’s Neko Jump for me.
I don’t know what it is. Maybe I just like their sugary sweet sound with their crazy, cute lyrics. Maybe it’s because I used to be one of those girls who would download the latest Berryz Koubou PV the moment it was released and have it on repeat for the next 72 hours learning the dance. Maybe in my previous life I was a perverted old man with an underage Japanese school girl fetish. I DON’T KNOW. But whatever the reason, I must admit I have a bit of a soft spot for these girls.

Their self-titled debut EP was released late 2006 with their first single, “ปู / Pboo / Crabs.” Yes, crabs. Apparently (though I can’t say I’ve ever heard of it,) it’s a bad omen to dream about crabs, and that’s all this random song is about. Weird song, yes. Weirder video, yes. But catchy, quite catchy, and the tune has recently been used (with different lyrics) for a popular…toothbrush commercial.

The rest of the album is filled with cuter ballads like “Saranghaeyo / I Love You (Korean),” “My Gallery” – haha, Neko Jump are always having cute songs about camera cellphones, and “เขาจะเหงาไหม / Kao Ja Ngao Mai / Will He Be Lonely?”, as well as a second, wacky upbeat track, “ช่วยมัดหน่อย / Chuay Mut Noy / Please Tie Me Up.”

Since this release, they’ve had one other EP album, “Joop Joop,” as well as success in Japan. The girls are currently working on their third release, due out at the end of this year.

Can’t stand random nonsensical Japanese and Korean jibberish being rambled in the background? Stay clear of these two. Guilty pleasure? Go ahead. I won’t tell :]

I absolutely adore the song “คำถามโง่ๆ / Kum Tahm Ngoh Ngoh / Stupid Questions.” One of my BOYd Kosiyapong favorites, I love everything about this song, from the melody to the vocals, to the totally cute and relatable lyrics.

And vaguely remembering the MV from a while back, I began to think the guy in the MV looked a lot like cuttO from Lipta…then, reminded of how much I loved the song again, I started listening to it a lot again…and looked it up…and it turns out it was cuttO! Before he was even in Lipta, I think! All this time I’ve been listening to cuttO without even realizing it! Haha~

The MV, on the other hand… Perhaps this is a “stupid question,” but can anyone really explain what happens? hahaha.. I like it, but first of all cuttO cries? It’s so weird to see him serious! And then it cuts to the wedding scenes and he’s cheesy crazy again…and I’m kind of confused. So..they were married, then he got in whatever accident that gave him a cuncussion or whatever and he didn’t recognize his wife until all the memories start flooding back? Right?

Thought I’d review an older release for a change, so why not Laolom’s self-titled debut album?

This was such an awesome CD, I can listen to it all the way through, over and over again, without ever wanting to skip around tracks. Also the only full 10-track album Laolom’s been given, I thought it was pretty solid and hope they’ll be given another full project soon.

The CD starts out with an energetic track entitled “ใส่ไม่ยั้ง / Sai Mai Yung / Continuously Growing.” This was the song that started it all!! Their debut single released mid 2006, just my type of energetic, upbeat pop rock, combined with Guk looking so damn cute and thrashing around in the MV, I fell in love with it the moment I heard it and have been a Laolom fan ever since.

Despite how much that song might be my favorite, however, it was the second track and second single that people started noticing them from. “หยุดได้ไหม / Yoot Dai Mai / Please Stop,” a sadder rock ballad, this is probably the song they’re most known for.

The rest of the tracks on the album are all winners, from the more upbeat, fun and my personal favorites like “อย่าล้อเล่น / Yah Lor Len / Don’t Tease Me!” and “รักทั้งที / Ruk Tung Tee / Total Love,”

Slower, more easy listening ballads with cute, pretty lyrics
“เพื่อนกับแฟน แทนกันไม่ได้ / Peuan Gup Faen Taen Gun Mai Dai / Friends With a Lover Isn’t As Good” – a sad rock ballad about wanting to be friends with an ex, though it hurts.
“เอาเรื่องอยู่ / Ao Reuang Yoo / Very Particular “ – An easy listen with cute lyrics of having a crush and wanting to beg the other person to feel the same way
“มีใครหรือยัง / Mee Krai Reu Yung / Do You Have Someone Yet?” – Asking someone if they have someone yet, and if not, why don’t they ever have time for a date
“ที่แท้รักแค่เธอ / Tee Tae Ruk Kae Tur / Actually, I Only Love You” – Pretty sure this was another single? Regardless, nice lyrics about admitting fault and begging for forgiveness.
“เมื่อไหร่จะเหงาเท่ากัน / Meua Rai Ja Ngao Tao Gun / When Will You Be Lonely Like Me?” – Another of my favorites with cute lyrics wondering if and when a certain someone who seems to be too busy for love ever feels lonely.

The album ends with the slightly harder track, “รอยหยัก / Roy Yuk / Imprint,” a rebellious song about wanting some freedom to find one’s self and experience life for themselves.

All in all, I thought it was a great release, nice solid debut, and it kind of makes me angry that RS has only given them EP mini albums since.

Regardless, I’m excited to hear their new single which will be released soon, hopefully foreshadowing an end-of-the-year 4th album release~

Ahhhh Basher! They’re another one of those groups, regrettably, who I really like but who never seem to really stick in my mind. Perhaps it’s because they’re not so much wide-spread, being on an indie label (Same one as Harem Belle and Ritalinn) Funky, dorky alternative rock, these three guys are really fun, though! Debuting in 2005, Basher has had 3 albums to their name, as well as one best-of and several singles on compilation CDs. While all their releases have been great, I have to say so far my favorite is their third album, “3D.” (Isn’t it always said a group’s 3rd release is the best anyway?)

All the songs are either so lighthearted and fun, or have pretty, totally relatable lyrics~

The very first track and their first single from it, “ให้ท่า / Hai Tah / Tease,” is so ridiculously great haha. Great light alternative sound, catchy melody, and fun lyrics about floating along on the sea of life, looking for the “right shore to park the boat” haha~ The MV for it is really funny too! The boys are such crazy dorks, featuring them “flirting up” the camera, doing their rowboat dance, and cutting to cartoon scenes of them rowing along in their boats.

My second favorite song on the album is “ฆ่าคนตายโดยไม่เจตนา / Kah Kon Dtai Doey Mai Jet Nah / Accidentally Killed Someone.” This song is soooo catchy and the lyrics are so funny, I just love it!

My favorite song has to be track 9, though, “ลืมตาดูโลก / Leum Dtah Doo Lohk / Open Your Eyes and Look at the World.” I really love everything about this song, the rock sound, the vocals, the lyrics. P’Home, the guitarist’s part is super impressive too. One of the more sadder songs, I really love the lyrics.

This entire album is just great, from the more upbeat, fun, and flirty tracks like “ยิ่งรู้จัก ยิ่งรักเธอ / Ying Roo Juk Ying Ruk Tur / The More I Get to Know You, The More I Love You” and “ปากหวาน / Pahk Wahn / Sweet-Talk,” to the slower, more emotional numbers like “เจ็บทุกทาง / Jep Took Tahng / Hurting Every Way,” “คนไม่รู้จัก / Kon Mai Roo Juk / Unfamiliar Person,” and “ฤดูไหนก็หนาว / Reu Doo Nai Gor Nao / No Matter the Season, It’s Cold.” If this is your type of music, definitely give Basher a listen.

So, I haven’t done a movie review in a while… well, actually this is a movie PREVIEW of Ananda’s next film titled โลงต่อตาย / Long Dtor Dtai / The Coffin. It was mentioned in my previous post on Potato’s last single “Yeu” which is the theme song for this film.

Millions believe that lying down in a coffin is a part of the death-before-dying ritual to prolong one’s life by playing dead.

Chris (Ananda Everingham) is an architect who is extremely claustrophobic. He decides to overcome this fear by being inside a coffin as well as to lengthen the life of his girlfriend, Mamiko (Arki Shibuya). Zoe (Karen Mok), a nutritionist, takes care of her health religiously. However, only 2 weeks before marrying her fiancé (Andrew Lin), Zoe finds out that she’s in the final stage of lung cancer. Zoe then runs away to Thailand and discovers the coffin ceremony and decides to participate in order to save her own life.

After the two partaking in the coffin ritual, the spine-chilling story follows. Chris and Zoe are confronted by a series of paranormal and terrifying incidents. Both might have to sacrifice their lives to unfold the truth.

Gotta say, I don’t like tight spaces either but the idea of lying in a coffin awakes more than a claustrophobia fear… deathwish, perhaps? Nevetheless, Ananda looks lovely although I prefer him standing outside the box. I like a nice horror film every now and then BUT like with most horror films, their aim is to give the audience a good scare with the usual display a lot of bloody gore and lots of screaming leaving the plot to fade into nonsense. Still, I have to give every horror movie the benefit of the doubt so we’ll see how this one turns out…

I just got round to reviewing Potato’s latest release called “ยื้อ / Yeu / Free You” which is the theme song for the film “โลงต่อตาย / Long Dtor Dtai / The Coffin” starring Ananda Everingham. The single has been in the charts for about four weeks and is just crawling to number 3 this week from last week’s number 4 on Hotwave.

The song starts off a bit creepy with almost church organ music and suddenly bursts into this very upbeat emo rock music; electric guitar, drums, wild hair. The upbeat sound reminded me of Anime type music like that of “Prince of Tennis” which was interesting because I momentarily forgot this was Potato.

The lyrics are interesting as the guy fighting against heaven from taking his beloved. I’m interested to see how this fits with the movie’s plot.

Gotta say, I can’t stand the hurling screaming that’s prevalent here and in a lot of other rock songs recently. Pup’s also reaching quite strenuous notes in this one, I’d be surprised if he didn’t lose his voice after recording. Definitely a song to jump to during the high bits. It may take a few listens before the song grows on you, that is, if you can also accept the evolving sound and look of Potato.

The theme of this MV is quite dark to begin with bearing in mind this is for a movie called “The Coffin” (title is self-explanatory). Still, I have to say the overall video was pretty… weird, for a lack of better words. If they were going for creepy-interesting then the director was a bit off here. I couldn’t, for the life of me, understand what was up with Tao (Sweet Mullet) and the hurling screaming and of course, the mysterious threads across his face?! Let’s hope it has to do with the movie which opens on Thursday 21 August.

The other thing I noticed is Pup’s look. Since I last reviewed “Arom See Thao”, he hasn’t been choosing the best style from the neck up. I have yet to find out whether that hideous tattoo on his neck is real, although I can’t imagine him wearing a fake one. Definitely don’t want to see him wear eyeliner in the next MV, let’s hope it’s not required for their next single.

As for the band, sadly there wasn’t any decent close-up footage of them this time. You may (or may not) have noticed the new drummer is now a girl!
